LOS ANGELES, July 1 Martin Scorsese begins production on his foray into 3D with the adaptation of the mysterious novel The Invention of Hugo Cabret with Jude Law (pic) joining the strong cast. Now simply titled Hugo Cabret, it is scheduled for release in December 2011.

It stars Chloe Moretz (Kick-Ass), Ben Kingsley (Shutter Island), Sacha Baron Cohen (Borat, Sweeney Todd), Ray Winstone (The Departed), Christopher Lee (The Lord of the Rings), and Asa Butterfield (The Wolfman, Nanny McPhee Returns) in the title role.

The novel by Brian Selznick is set in 1930s Paris, centred on an orphan who lives in the walls of a train station wrapped up in secrets about his late father and a robot. His treasured world is put in jeopardy when he connects with a bookish girl and cold old man at a toy booth in this magical adventure.

The script is written by John Logan (The Aviator, Rango) and Johnny Depp produces with Scorsese and members of the directors team.

Scorseses next film to be released is the documentary Living in the Material World: George Harrison, about the musician and former Beatle. The latest casting news for his planned biopic on Frank Sinatra claims Al Pacino will portray Ole Blue Eyes with Robert DeNiro as singer Dean Martin.

Moretz will next reprise her role as Hit-Girl in Kick-Ass 2: Balls to the Wall, and can be seen in the vampire tale Let Me In later this year and the thriller The Fields with Sam Worthington in 2011.

Kingsley is shooting a thriller called Number 13 with Emily Mortimer about a murder mystery on the set of an Alfred Hitchcock production, and A Birders Guide to Everything with Bryan Cranston.
